Question:
Is it permissible to recite the Holy Qur’an during menstruation period (Haidh)?
Answer:
- When a woman is on her menstrual cycle, she is not permitted to perform several Islamic rituals. One of these rituals is reciting the Holy Qur’an.
- However, it is impermissible for a woman who is on her menstrual cycle to recite the Holy Qur’an only with the intention of its recitation.
- As there are various Surahs (chapters) and Ayat (verses) in the Holy Qur’an which are recited for healing, supplication and other purposes; there is nothing wrong in reciting them with those intentions during one’s menstrual cycle.
- Thus, reciting Surah Fatihah or Aayatul Kursi etc. for healing, or as supplication, is permissible for women during their menstruation, but not with the intention of reciting from the Holy Qur’an.
- Although, a female teacher is permitted to teach the Holy Qur’an during her menstrual cycle, provided that she teaches no more than a WORD at a time, by taking a pause after every word.
