Reciting Tashahhud (At-Tahiyyaat) more than once in Salah

Reciting Tashahhud (At-Tahiyyaat) more than once in Salah

Question:

What is the hukm (ruling) if Tashahhud (At-Tahiyyaat) is repeated twice in one rak’ah, intentionally or unintentionally?

Answer:

الجواب باسم ملهم الصواب

  • If Tashahhud (At-Tahiyyaat) is recited more than once in the first Qa’dah (sitting), then Sajdah Sahw (corrective Sajdah) must be performed in the final sitting. If that is not performed, then the Salah must be performed again.
  • However, if Tashahhud (At-Tahiyyaat) is recited more than once in the final Qa’dah (sitting), then the Salah is valid and there is no requirement of performing Sajdah Sahw.
  • The above rulings apply regardless of whether Tashahhud (At-Tahiyyaat) is repeated intentionally or unintentionally.
  • However, if a person recites less than a half of Tashahhud (At-Tahiyyaat), then starts reciting it from the beginning again in the first Qa’dah, there is no need to perform Sajdah Sahw.
  • In summary, Sajdah Sahw must be performed if more than a half of Tashahhud (At-Tahiyyaat) is recited more than once in the first Qa’dah. Otherwise, there is no need to perform Sajdah Sahw, and the Salah will be performed correctly.

Only Allah knows the best.
