Question:
A friend of mine was performing his Salah behind an imam. When the imam began to perform Ruku’, he thought that the imam was performing Sajdah. Therefore, he began to perform Sajdah. Soon he realised his mistake and tried to join the imam in Ruku’. However, by the time he returned to Ruku’, the imam had already completed his Ruku’. What is the ruling regarding his Salah?
Answer:
- The general principle is that a muqtadi (person praying behind an imam) must follow the imam in every act of Salah.
- Therefore, in the above scenario, the Salah was not valid – as the muqtadi has failed to join the imam in the performance of a full rukn (component) of Salah.
- The Salah must be performed again.
Only Allah knows best.
